UK to finish with coal power
The UK is about to stop producing any electricity from burning coal - ending its 142-year reliance on the fossil fuel.
The country's last coal power station, at Ratcliffe-on-Soar, finishes operations on Monday after running since 1967.
This marks a major milestone in the country's ambitions to reduce its contribution to climate change. Coal is the dirtiest fossil fuel producing the most greenhouse gases when burnt.
Minister for Energy Michael Shanks said: "We owe generations a debt of gratitude as a country."
Why Black Pellets are the Future of Sustainable Power Generation
Why Black Pellets are the Future of Sustainable Power Generation 🌱 As the global energy landscape shifts towards sustainability, the use of black pellets, a form of woody biomass, is gaining momentum as an efficient, eco-friendly alternative for generating electrical power in boilers. Here’s why black pellets are a potential game-changer: Carbon Neutrality: Black pellets are made from renewable biomass sources like wood and agricultural residues. When burned, they release only as much carbon dioxide as the plants absorbed during their growth, making them a carbon-neutral energy source. High Energy Density: Compared to traditional biomass, black pellets have a higher energy density. This means more energy can be generated per ton, leading to greater efficiency and reduced transportation costs. Versatility: Black pellets can be easily integrated into existing coal-fired power plants without significant modifications, enabling a smooth transition to greener energy without massive capital investment. Reduced Emissions: Using black pellets in boilers results in lower emissions of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter compared to coal, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment. Enhanced Durability: Black pellets are torrefied or steam treated, making them water-resistant and less prone to degradation during storage. This ensures consistent energy output and reliability in power generation. As the world seeks to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels, black pellets offer a promising path forward, aligning economic efficiency with environmental responsibility. North America has ample biomass that can be used to make black pellets, and should be used for domestic power generation.🌍🔋
Coalternative through their subsidiary Powerwood Canada are pleased to announce the signing of an MOU between Powerwood and the Pabineau and Eel River Bar First Nations in New Brunswick. This cooperation and partnership between Powerwood and the First nations will support the development of a new 400k tons per annum Steam Treated Black Pellet plant close to the Port of Belle Dune and adjacent to the New Brunswick Power station which is seeking to enter a long term off take of Powerwood’s black pellets.
Powerwood are excited to have the support and cooperation with two of the most forward thinking and influential First Nations in the region and look forward to building on this partnership for the benefit of the First Nations and the entire population of New Brunswick by enabling the continued operation of the NB Power plant.

The current status of forest fires in Canada
This study examines the CO2e emissions associated with rail and marine transport and compares black pellets and white pellets. The report also briefly analyses the other environmental benefits of black pellets such as greenhouse gas emissions, wildfires and beetle infestation and argues that the proposed biomass plant can make an important contribution to combating climate change and promoting biodiversity.
Forest fires in Canada: Clouds of smoke reach Germany
The effects of the large forest fires in Canada are now also affecting Europe. Satellite images of smoke clouds show this. They are expected to reach southern Germany on Friday. But there is no need to worry.
Forest fires in Canada out of control – situation in Alberta “unpredictable” despite rain
Dozens of forest fires are still raging in western Canada. Thousands of people have had to leave their homes. The cause of many of the fires is still unknown.
